Hi, I’m Cre! Coiled baskets are one of my favorite things to make, and I’ve filmed a lot of free tutorials over the years. I pulled together 13 of the best ones for beginners, starting with the easiest. Each one has the full video right here, so you can follow along step by step.
Brand new to coiling? Start with my step-by-step guide to making your first coil basket, then come back and pick your next project from this list.
What you need for most of these baskets
- Filler cord. I use 3/8-inch cotton filler cord in almost every video. Shop filler cord.
- Something to wrap with: braided cord, yarn or t-shirt yarn. Browse my yarns and cords.
- A darning needle with a big eye. Darning needle set.
- Scissors, and a clip to hold your work if you have one.

My beginner coiled basket kits come with the fiber, filler cord, needle and a video tutorial, so you can skip the shopping and start today.
1. Mini Coiled Basket for Beginners
This is the one I recommend to anyone who has never coiled before. A mini basket is small enough to finish in one sitting, so you learn the whole process (starting, building the base, shaping the sides and finishing) without a big time commitment.

2. How to Make a Coiled Basket with Yarn
Once you’ve made a mini basket, a full-size yarn basket is the perfect next step. Yarn is soft and easy to wrap, and you can play with color as you go.

3. How to Make a Coiled Basket with T-Shirt Yarn
T-shirt yarn is thick and stretchy, so it covers the filler cord quickly and the basket grows fast. It’s one of my most popular tutorials and a great choice for beginners.

4. DIY Coiled Basket for Beginners
Another yarn basket, start to finish. In this one I take my time and explain each step, so it’s a good one to watch if you want to see the whole process slowly.

Ready to try a base?
Starting with a base gives your basket a pretty bottom and makes the first rounds easier. I carry ceramic bases and lots of fun shaped bases.
